Modest Dress & Public Nakedness

Modest dress and public nakedness. When I think of nakedness I think of one who has no clothes, rendering them naked. More recently, however, I came to understand that nakedness can also mean exposing the body by covering it inadequately. It is possible to be fully clothed and still naked. How? In the way that the details of the human form are left vulnerable to public gaze when clothes are totally absent, the same result can occur when the body is clothed but with articles that do nothing to obscure or conceal the details of the body from sight. Being a woman, my thoughts go first and foremost to how much of women’s fashion is specifically designed to encourage the woman to display her nakedness publicly. The all too familiar American “uniform” of fitted jeans and tight t-shirts render the woman fully clothed and totally naked. Her body is left to scrutiny by every passerby as if her body were communal, public property. She is not public property. Her body is not meant for public viewing pleasure. She is greatly loved and wonderfully made and to be held in high regard because of the One who made her: The Lord God himself. Sadly, much of the public does not understand this. Sadly many women do not understand this about themselves. But when each one, teaches one we grow into a fuller understand of the Lord Jesus and therefore a fuller understanding of who we are in Him. The Modest Fitting is an online women’s boutique dedicated to offering garments that hope to capture an image of how The Lord intended His daughters to be arrayed: in beauty, in femininity, most important of all, in modesty.
